2013 National Off Road Championship, Round 2

Gas Gas UK’s Danny McCanney placed third and then second at the second round of the National Off Road Championship at Rogershill Raceway in Dorset at the weekend. It was an event run to the Sprint format after the first round which was an extreme enduro. McCanney lies second in the championship with two rounds remaining (which will feature cross-country and motoduro races).

McCanney, riding his 2013 Gas Gas EC 300 Racing, suffered two crashes on his first run (of eight) on day one, landing himself a 30-second deficit on leader David Knight and putting himself behind other close rivals. However, he fought back, at times matching Knight for lap times and only just missed out on the runner-up by two seconds. On day two McCanney rode a consistent day to stay over two minutes ahead of his pursuers while limiting Knight’s lead to under a minute.

Danny McCanney: “That was a very good, enjoyable, event. I made it difficult for myself by crashing on a tight off-camber corner in the very first run. My back brake was bent backwards so I had no brake for the rest of the run and lost 30 seconds on David straight away. After that my pace was good and I was unlucky to just miss out on the runner-up. On day two I was on average just 5-seconds behind David on each lap, except one where I overshot a corner. So again I was very happy with my speed.

“The event was great training for the coming three weeks as well, as the going was hard pack, dry and dusty so with the upcoming Spanish championship this weekend and then the two EWC rounds in Spain and Portugal I’m well prepared.”
